Action Requested:
Consider a resolution authorizing the City Manager to execute an agreement with Datavox, of Houston, Texas, for the purchase and configuration of networking equipment, through the State of Texas Department of Information Resources (DIR) Cooperative Purchasing Program, for the Information Technology Department.
Background:
The current core Cisco router/switch at the police department is 10 years old. While it is still supported by Cisco until next year, it has reached the end of its useful life. Network technology continues to advance and the current equipment is limiting the ability to use newer, more beneficial features. The equipment that is being replaced serves as the core internal router and switch for police department.
The current Cisco firewall devices that serve as the primary firewalls for the City’s two internet connections have also reached the end of their useful life. We have chosen to replace our existing Cisco firewalls with next-generation firewalls from Palo Alto Networks. We have several years fo experience with Palo Alto devices that are currently being used in other parts of the City. Through extensive research, we feel confident that these Palo Alto devices will provide the more advanced, higher levels of security that we require moving forward.
The specific pieces of networking equipment in this proposal were chosen with future technology in mind. This equipment is anticipated to have a useful lifespan of at least 10 years.
Financial Impact:
The cost of the Cisco router/switch equipment for the police department is $51,484.77.
The cost of the Palo Alto Firewall devices is $50,840.60.
The cost to configure and install all equipment is $26,357.14.
Total Cost: $128,682.51
Funding is available inf the Fiscal Year 2022-2023 Information Technology Fund.
