Action Requested:

Consider a resolution approving the purchase of hand-held radios for the Police Department in the amount of $224,893.12.

Background:

The City of Keller has been implementing a multi-year plan to upgrade the Police Department’s communication equipment to enhance officer safety, operational effectiveness, and interoperability with regional public safety agencies.

In Year 1, the City Council approved Resolution No. 4602, authorizing the purchase of APX6500 and APX6000 radios from Motorola Solutions, Inc. through the Houston-Galveston Area Council (H-GAC) Cooperative Purchasing Program. This initial investment provided the department with intrinsically safe, modern radios designed for a 15-year service life.

In Year 2, the City continued this initiative with Resolution No. 4781, approving additional radio purchases to replace aging equipment and ensure all personnel had access to advanced communication tools with enhanced encryption and interoperability features.

As the City enters Year 3, the latest quote from Motorola Solutions represents the next phase of the upgrade plan. This purchase continues the City's commitment to equipping the Keller Police Department with state-of-the-art communication devices. By leveraging cooperative purchasing agreements, the City ensures cost-effective procurement while maintaining consistency with previous years' investments in public safety technology.

The cost of radio replacement is $224,893.12. The KCCPD budget includes $225,000 this year for this project.

Citizen Input/Board Review:

The KCCPD Board approved this radio replacement project as part of their budget at their 6/26/24 Board Meeting and City Council approved the CCPD budget on 7/16/2024.
