Consider a resolution authorizing the submittal of a grant application to the Office of the Governor Criminal Justice Division for funding under the Rifle-Resistant Body Armor Grant Program; and authorizing the City Manager to execute all required documents.
Background:
The Office of the Governor Criminal Justice Division works to provide needed funding to improve public safety and support victims of crime. In response to the July 7, 2016 shooting of numerous police officers in Dallas, Texas, the Legislature passed Senate Bill 12 creating a program within the Governor’s Officer for a grant program to increase law enforcement safety by assisting agencies with the purchase of rifle-resistant body armor.
The Office of the Governor Criminal Justice Division is accepting applications for the non-matching grant for this program. It is anticipated that up to $25 million may be funded, which is the amount authorized under Senate Bill 12 and appropriated by the 85th Legislature.
The Police Department requests approval to finalize submission for the said grant and utilize the funds provided, if awarded, to purchase 30 Rifle Resistant Body Armor Kits.
Budget Impact:
This is a non-matching grant. The amount requested through this submission would be $33,338.
Financial Considerations:
No match required. Must spend the funds between January 1, 2018, and December 31, 2018.
Alternatives:
City Council has the following alternatives:
- Approve as submitted
- Approve with changes
- Denial
Council Action:
Approve the proposed resolution as presented.
