Title

Consider a resolution supporting the 2019 Safe Routes to School application submission for sidewalks around the Keller Harvel Elementary and Bear Creek Intermediate schools and authorizing the City Manager to execute all agreements.

Body

Background:

In response to a call for projects by TxDOT for the 2019 Safe Routes to School (SRTS) program award cycle, Public Works has submitted and been approved for preliminary consideration by the state.  Having met the preliminary approval hurdle, the city has been asked to prepare a more detailed proposal that requires letters of support from the ISD, the TxDOT District Office and a resolution of support from the city indicating that if this application is successful, that the project will proceed to completion.

The SRTS application affects sidewalks that serve the Keller Harvel Elementary and Bear Creek Intermediate schools.  The sidewalks are currently not in place and can be seen in the attached Attachment A and Attachment B.  These sidewalks and schools were chosen by the city based on the proximity to the school, the availability of right of way, the ease of construction, and alignment with a pedestrian walk plan for that school.  The state will further evaluate the application based on safety, project readiness, connectivity, community support and alignment with a plan.

Financial Impact:

If successful in being awarded this grant, sufficient funding exists in the city General Fund until the 100% reimbursement can be requested of the state.
